I almost finished HP3: Prisoner of Azkaban last night, and then finished it on the commute to work this morning. Now I'm starting on HP4: Goblet of Fire.

I just passed the section where it is explained that Mrs. Weasley is pissed that the twins don't want to get government bureaucrat jobs and instead want to (shudder) start a business, with the complaints that not wanting a government salary is "no ambition" "dont know where we went wrong", while Percy talks about gov't enforcing international standards for cauldron thickness out of fear that "the market will be flooded with cheap cauldrons".

Which is a damn stupid point-of-view to take, given how much his family has to scrimp and save to do things like buy school cauldrons for their kids.

No wonder the Weasleys are poor, if that's how they see how the world should be.

Yo, step off dem Weasleys! j/k

I'm reading HP5 before I read HP6. Interesting to watch Rowling work. I truly hope she doesn't screw the pooch on HP7... if she hangs tough, she's in the Immortal Lands with Narnia, Frodo, Mssr. Wonka, and the Phantom Tollbooth.

You'll note that over the first three books, every Ministry of Magic official we've met (with the exception of Authur Weasley) has been protrayed as incompetent, deceitful, or downright evil. This isn't an accident. The book takes an increasingly libertarian undertone as the series progresses.

So don't worry, Miss Weasley's view of the Ministry of Magic changed quite a bit over the next two books.

This HP stuff is world-wide too. Out in the back woods, truly BumFuck Thailand, no running water in the house, the 17-yo sister of the guy I was seeing couldn't speak English, but she could say "Har-ree Pot-ter!" and she had the poster on the wall, right next to the dinner-plate sized spider that was crawling across it.

In Mrs. W's defence, I think it's the nature of the business (joke shop) that's most of the problem. And in Book 6 (small spoiler) she's actually proud of the Twins' business savvy.

As for Percy, he's not exactly a role model.
