fallenpegasus: (birthday)
I'm turning 40, and I want a party. The big day is actually on the 5th, but the 7th is a Saturday, easier for people to come.

Games. Socializing. Wine. Veggie Potluck.

Cake will be provided. No gifts expected.

If you know and like me, you are invited.

Where: The AlohaHaus, Capitol Hill Neighborhood, Seattle WA

When: Things will start happening around 5pm.

The hot tub will be opened at about 10. Towels are provided.

There are futons and other crash space, if you need to stay the night.

There is a dog and some cats here, so medicate up if necessary.

This is a veggie household. Eggs and dairy are ok. Bring food to potluck share if you wish. Dishes do not have to be labeled, but you can if you wish.

There is beer, wine, and spirits. Bring a bottle if you want to share.

There will be people from lots of different social groups, some kids, and members of my family attending.

If you read my blog, or follow my Twitter feed, you know I'm in San Francisco.

I'm throwing a "get together dinner out" thing Monday night. If, for whatever reason, you think it would be interesting to go out to dinner with me and hopefully a pile of interesting people, you're invited.

Any other interesting people you know, are also invited.

Topics of conversation are also to be determined, but stuff like MySQL, OAuth, OpenID, Open Source, Seattle, San Francisco, the Geek Lifestyle, Telecommuting, Science Fiction, Beer, Wine, Food, Flirting, Art, Drawing, Rock Climbing, Long Black Coats, and other similar random subjects have a good chance to come up.

What? Okoze Sushi
Where? 1207 Union St, San Francisco CA 94109
When? 7pm
Who? party in the name of "Mark Atwood"
Why? cool geeks!

I'm at the Lake Bronson private resort, with a bunch of burners who couldn't go to Burning Man. The regulars here, who are almost all retirees with big RVs, are friendly but confused towards the crowd of weird geekraverhippies under the huge parachut tent, what with their weird music, and brightly colored plastic junk.

The burners are building a wooden man in the firepit, which they plan to ignite at the same time as the burn in Black Rock City.

I'm most probably going to go at least one day to each of these:
  • University StreetFair, May 19-20
  • Folklife, May 25-28
  • Fremont Fair, Jun 16-17
  • Bite of Seattle, July 20-22
  • Capitol Hill Block Party, July 27-28
  • Ballard SeaFoodFest, July 28-29
  • Bumbershoot, Sept 1-3

If anyone of y'all wants to visit Seattle this summer, the weekend of one of our summer parties is a Good Time to do it.

Last night was the dinner and party for Jen and for Ivo's birthday, at the Metaphorist. The suggested dress code was "sexy". And a lot of people had a lot of fun with that. I wore one of my better sarongs. A couple of times in the evening, people either verbally wished it would come untied, or tried to untie it. Frustrating to them, I had tied it well, and besides, I was wearing something underneath...

The party was fun, the dinner was excellent, catered from Cedars. (Sometime I need to do a "Mark's Stories" about my first experience with Indian food.) The conversations and flirting were a lot of fun. One gorgeous lady with a big grin told me that she had been warned about me, that I was "flirtatious and wolflike". The first I will occasionally cop to, when I'm "on", but the second was a bit surprising, not part of my self-image at all.

Around noon yesterday I went to Dim-Sum with [livejournal.com profile] intrepid_reason and a bunch of her friends. Fun and tasty. After that, we walked down to Uwajimaya where she did a little bit of food shopping. I discovered that one could buy big five gallon tubs of miso paste, and of green tea ice cream and red bean ice cream. Mmmm. I will use this knowledge sometime.

The weather all day was very weird, cycling quickly between overcast, sprinkled rain, heavy rain, and blazing sun.

Friday, after slogging around in the code for my project, I drove downtown to pickup [livejournal.com profile] elfs from his workplace, and then headed to his place for Fish Friday. We picked up [livejournal.com profile] omahas and the girls on the way.

Dinner was decided to be shrimp and noodles. It came out very photogenic, and tasted excellent. The wine of the evening was MénageÀ Trois, which we had had last year some time. My review of this next year's bottle was the same as my review of it last year, "it tastes like what you'd drink right before you do it's name".

While roughhousing with Kouryou-chan, I ended up suspending her by her forearms. She was giggling and kicking, and I told her that I'd put her down if she could touch her toes to my wrists. And without pausing, that's exactly what she did. Darn, but that girl has strong and flexible abs!

After the girls were put to bed, the three adults played a new game, reading "The Eye of Argon", a game that had been taught to me by [livejournal.com profile] perldiver. It's a simple game. You print out a copy of said story, and each person reads out loud until they giggle, laugh, or bust up. Given Elf and Omaha's enjoyment of the craft of writing, it was especially brutal on them. Hilarity.

When I was working for a paycheck, and Norwescon time would roll around, I would take the Friday off, and do all three days of it. Now that I've got a project that is from me, things are a little different. Friday I worked, instead of going. And Saturday morning, I worked, instead of going.

But I did get there at about noon.

I saw [livejournal.com profile] intrepid_reason as I was checking in, and then hooked up with [livejournal.com profile] elfs, [livejournal.com profile] omahas and Kouryou-chan, and did lunch at Denny's, along with a friend of theirs from work and coven. Then in the dealer's room there was the pleasent surprise of [livejournal.com profile] wantswings, who looks much healthier and improved after her surgery. Other hall encounters were [livejournal.com profile] julzerator, [livejournal.com profile] shemayazi, [livejournal.com profile] helix90 (who looked very tired and busy, probably from Merchants of Diva), [livejournal.com profile] keithr ([livejournal.com profile] sultry_peacock was also there, dancing, but I never was able to find her again to say hello), [livejournal.com profile] clemtaur, [livejournal.com profile] chemicallace and a couple of her friends from school, [livejournal.com profile] kespernorth, [livejournal.com profile] jezel, who was there as a roadie for the masquerade halftime show by a local improv group "Comedy Court", [livejournal.com profile] aggrobat at the MoD party, we comisserated about vet bills, [livejournal.com profile] airlinepilot, [livejournal.com profile] scott_t_s and many others.

My horns got a lot of smiles. I got flirted with very heavily a couple of times.

I browsed the artshow, but nothing really grabbed me. Tho I was pleased to know that one of the better pieces from SEAF was also on display there.

I browsed the dealers den, but didn't buy anything. Tho I did try on an "easy wear turban".

I danced some at the main dance.

I hung out a lot at the MoD party, especially with Bjorn, Allyson, and her friends. It wasn't nearly as oppressively crowded as it was last year, which made it much better.

While walking down the corridor of the party wing, I got stopped by a couple of very mundaine looking guys. "So, where is all the action here?", "Action?", "You know... action. Tables?" "No" (guessing he was referring to poker, et al. "Hookers?" "Not likely." "Party favors?" (Drugs) "Not likely." "Booze?" "End of this hall." And so they strode off, and I snerked a bit to myself about them.

I got press ganged into a game of werewolf by a brassy young lady who was less than half my age. I drew one of the seer cards, but got lynched in the second round.

I played lifeguard/respite duty for Kouryou-chan, while she paddled around the pool.

I ate sandwiches and beans for dinner in Hospitality.

I watched the masquerade / costume contest, and the comedy improve halftime show. [livejournal.com profile] jezel is good friends with a couple of people in the troup. I had never seen their show before.

At about 2:30am, I was wiped, gathered up my stuff, and headed out. On the way out, I ran into JenBoi and Hazel, who were eye catchingly dressed up to head to the dance. I hugged them goodbye, and went home.

I'm getting so old. Once upon a time, a 3 day weekend con would mean being up and going for three days, with minimal sleep. Not anymore. But I think I get a lot more social fun out of 15 hours of con now than I used to get in 70.

[livejournal.com profile] krow (who could have gone to a much cooler party in Silicon Valley instead), [livejournal.com profile] ein_traum, [livejournal.com profile] solomoning (who made the "mauled by chocolate" cake), [livejournal.com profile] radarrider (who tooks some pictures, [livejournal.com profile] elfs, [livejournal.com profile] omahas, Kouryou-chan, Yamrashi-chan, [livejournal.com profile] neocuriosity, [livejournal.com profile] pauldf, [livejournal.com profile] kespernorth, [livejournal.com profile] tonyawinter, [livejournal.com profile] intrepid_reason, Kent, Kelly & Stephanie, Chris & Sue, and a couple of others I know I'm forgetting.

Thanks for coming.

The Weekend

Friday afternoon I got to go enjoy lunch with [livejournal.com profile] intrepid_reason, a pleasent surprise because of my return home early, so the afternoon was available. That evening was Fish Friday at [livejournal.com profile] elfs & [livejournal.com profile] omahas. We are down to the last dregs of the fish I brought back from Alaska, esp since some got thrown out due to the power failure last week. The chowder was, as usual, yummy, the wine was mediocre, and the chocolate was excellent. (It was some Bonnat, recently featured on BoingBoing.)

Saturday I met [livejournal.com profile] lauraflora for coffee (well, hot chocolate). While trying to find the right cafe', I stumbled on the LDS chapel in Burien. I could just about hit it was a fastball from [livejournal.com profile] elfs home, which amused me. It was nice to see Laura again. That evening I had group dinner and soaked in the tub here at the AlohaHaus, and slept in my own bed.

Sunday, after house breakfast, I took [livejournal.com profile] solomoning to the Vashon ferry so he could go to Snow's bday party at Michaels, and then went to the downtown ferry terminal to pick up [livejournal.com profile] amythis. While I waited, I watched a bit more "Clockwork Orange" (I can only handle watching about 10 minutes at a stretch, it's an intense movie), and then hacked a bit on some elisp. That evening we were part of a group going out to dinner at Sashay Malay. I discovered something that sounds weird and tastes great, an "avocado smoothie", sweetened with molasses. After that, we all headed up to the Tabara NYE party. A big fun group. I was glad I had received my new personal calling cards, I was able to several of them out to people I wanted to know better. The only downside of the night was the hottub had trouble holding heat, 100°F is too cool.

Monday, has so far been really wonderfully languid. The plan is to go to the Metaphorist New Year Day party in an hour or so...
